During his weekly appearance on 105.3 The Fan’s Shan & RJ show, Jerry Jones addressed all of the drama surrounding his threatening one of the show’s hosts last week and doubled down on his excuse for not signing Derrick Henry.
After his Dallas Cowboys were embarrassed by the Detroit Lions 47-9 last week, Jerry Jones was asked about the team’s lack of notable roster moves in the offseason by the show’s hosts.
“This is not your job. Your job isn’t to let me go over all the reasons that I did something and I’m sorry that I did it,” Jones fired back. “That’s not your job. I’ll get someone else to ask these questions. I’m not kidding.”
Jones ended up taking a lot of heat for his not-so-veiled threat, especially since he doesn’t actually have the power to fire the host of a show on a radio station he doesn’t (officially) own.
So, this week, the first thing that was discussed during Jerry Jones’ appearance on the show was the controversy he started on last week’s show.
“I don’t have anything to say about last week,” Jones said on Tuesday. “I’m happy though… I must tell you, I’m surprised that last week got the attention it got.
“Really, when I think about what we try to do on this show, for me, is I think we give you two shots a week that I get on and Stephen [Jones] gets on once or twice and Mike [McCarthy], I don’t if Mike gets on or not, but those are really a privilege. It’s kind of like Peloton. You get some inside stuff.
“As you know, I don’t go before the normal press conferences during the week usually. And so this is the kind of thing that I would expect and how I would answer it relative to many of your questions.
“You’re going to ask me today, because [Derrick] Henry had a big night last night, you’re going to ask me again, ‘How come when Henry was available right here in Dallas that we didn’t get him?’
“And I will tell you, the same kind of question is one that my wife might ask me of 60-something years, ‘Why did you do that?’ And I said, ‘Well, I really don’t know why I did that. The devil made me do it.’ And so my point is, those kinds of questions are pointedly toward putting you on a spot to make a certain kind of answer.”
Jerry Jones did go on to admit, “In my mind, we’re not playing very good football right now, at all, and it’s beyond whether or not we have Derrick Henry or not. Derrick Henry is having a career year. I don’t know if he’d be having a career year in our situation.”
He also added, “Derrick Henry didn’t fit because, principally, of managing the cap, managing the cap in anticipation of the players that we were going to sign weeks later or anticipation of the players we’re going to be signing in the future.”
As for Troy Aikman’s pretty brutal criticism of the Cowboys wide receivers after the loss to the Lions, Jerry Jones said, “Troy knows football. My goodness. He lives it.
“When he was here he’s one of the most astute and hardworking people I’ve ever seen at evaluating tape or look at how a team is playing.
“Troy is credible, boy. And should be. And not only that, you can imagine, he’s not just interested in taking a whack at the Cowboys. He feels as much or more than anybody does about the Cowboys.
“He’s very professional. I think he’s very fair.”
