The Texas baseball team was eliminated from postseason play on Sunday following a second straight loss to instate rival UTSA. Jim Schlossnagle offered congratulations to the Roadrunners after the fact.

He provided a classy response following a disappointing end to the Longhorns‘ season. Unfortunately, it wouldn’t prevent a now-freezing cold take from resurfacing.

Texas won the SEC in Schlossnagle’s first year at the helm. The ‘Horns went 42-11 during the regular season which included a 22-8 mark in league play.

The Southeastern Conference has won 10 of the last 15 national titles, including five straight. The league sent 13 of 16 members to the postseason this year. Eight of those schools received No. 1 seeds. As a result, it’s often considered the best in the sport.

Schlossnagle agreed with that sentiment. He had the following to say after winning the regular season crown:

Winning an SEC title during the regular season is harder than winning a national championship. We want to win a national title, but this is a test of endurance and grit and, obviously, having a good team. I’m really proud of our players and the staff.

The coach was attempting to highlight the strength of his competition, as well as his team’s success on the field. The words resurfaced after the Longhorns’ early NCAA Tournament exit.

Jim Schlossnagle’s SEC take couldn’t have been colder.

Texas went just 3-4 after those comments were made on May 15th. They were one-and-done in the conference tournament before being bested by UTSA over the weekend. The postseason became the great equalizer for not only the Longhorns, but the SEC as a whole.

Texas was the No. 2 overall seed. Its season is now over before the Super Regionals. The same is true for No. 1 overall seed Vanderbilt, No. 7 seed Georgia, Kentucky, Florida, Mississippi State, and Alabama.

Of the 13 league teams in the field, seven have been eliminated from the NCAA Tournament. Four more play in winner-take-all elimination games on Monday. The SEC has been served a stiff dose of reality.

The league hasn’t been immune to upset losses and surprise postseason departures despite its perceived status, the Longhorns included. Still, Jim Schlossnagle applauded his opponent after seeing the season end in disappointment.

The 2025 college baseball campaign was one of extreme highs and lows for Texas. The SEC title in Year 1 is something that the program can certainly hang its hat on.

The early exit from the Austin Regional, however, puts a sour taste on the season as a whole. It goes to show the SEC badge doesn’t provide a direct path to Omaha.
