Hours before Oregon and Penn State were set to face off in the Big 10 Championship in Indianapolis, the greatest competitive eater of all time, Joey Chestnut, took the stage in peak form and set a new world record for most cocktail shrimp eaten in 8 minutes. Joey was coming into the World Famous St. Elmo Shrimp Cocktail Eating Championship in Indianapolis with an axe to grind after losing this competition two years in a row…
Going into the 2022 St. Elmo Cocktail Shrimp contest, Joey Chestnut had won the annual event 8 years in a row. He lost last year despite putting down 18 pounds and 9.6 ounces of cocktail shrimp in just 8 minutes and in 2022 he finished in a shocking 4th place. That’s all to say that Joey Chestnut was FIRED UP this year and looking to redeem himself and redeem himself he did.
Joey Chestnut crushed the competition and put down a world record 21 pounds of cocktail shrimp at the 11th annual World Famous St. Elmo Shrimp Cocktail Eating Championship in Indianapolis on Saturday before the Big 10 Championship. Chestnut weighs roughly 229 pounds on any given day so that represents just shy of 10% of his bodyweight eaten in only 8 minutes!
Some thought the G.O.A.T. might tally up a three-pat of losses but with there is simply no holding down the greatest of all time. It is not in Joey Chestnut’s DNA to lose three times in a row at anything and especially not when it comes to eating cocktail shrimp, something he holds the world record in.
Joey Chestnut’s shrimp-eating world record is the cherry on top of a banner year. BroBible’s Connor Toole spoke with Joey, a longtime friend of our website, in Las Vegas for an interview prior to his head-to-head matchup against Takeru Kobayashi and discussed the toll that competitive eating has taken on his mind and body. I also spoke with Joey Chestnut for an interview last year about the one competitive eating record he still wants to break that he hasn’t broken yet.
