Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield Lookalike Cosplaying Way Into Heisman Contention Amid Controversy

Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer looks like former Heisman trophy winner Baker Mayfield. In fact, there are many similarities between the passers.

Both burst onto the scene with other schools before transferring to Norman. Both carry themselves with a certain swagger that displays confidence in their style of play. Both won the Heisman trophy?

That last note is yet to be determined, but it’s far from an impossibility.

John Mateer is Heisman worthy

He proved it at Washington State last season. As a redshirt sophomore, he threw for 3,139 yards and 29 touchdowns.

Mateer is one of the top returning signal callers in college football in terms of passing production. He’ll now take a step up in competition in the SEC.

The quarterback left Pullman to join the Sooners this past offseason. He landed a seven-figure payday in the process.

Baker Mayfield played a role in that commitment. A personal phone call helped push Oklahoma over the edge.

After getting to Norman, the resemblance between Mayfield and Mateer became a talking point. The bandana. The swag. The build. It all checks out!

Now, Mateer is following in the form of controversy.

Mateer’s unintentional cosplay continues!

Baker Mayfield made a number of headlines throughout his Oklahoma career, one of which involved his taunting the Kansas Jayhawks sideline during a Big 12 contest.

The quarterback made an indecent gesture towards the opposing bench, which he apologized for after the fact. That apology came in the form of a “Notes” message posted to social media.

Mayfield would go onto win the Heisman trophy and lead the Sooners to the College Football Playoff in that 2017 season.

John Mateer was forced to take similar action following backlash surrounding recently uncovered Venmo transactions suggesting he’d gambled on sports while at Washington State.

The passer denied the allegations before posting his own “Notes” message online.

Heisman season loading? Should he skirt punishment from the NCAA, which seems likely at this point, it’s a possibility.

The similarities between John Mateer and Baker Mayfield are undeniable. Add another to the list!
