Think of when you were playing youth basketball, even up through high school basketball. You probably did layup lines all of the time, maybe even multiple times a practice and before each half of a game as coached looked to drill fundamentals into you.
If you go to an NBA game, you’ll see something somewhat resembling layup lines for a minute or two before the game, but it’s pretty unorganized. So, when the New York Knicks did actual layup lines before the 2nd half in their series-clinching win over the Detroit Pistons, 116-113.
After losing yet another closeout game at home, their third straight loss in such situations dating back to last season, the Knicks went on the road to Detroit with a 3-2 lead, hoping to close out the series. After a greqt opening quarter, they stumbled before half and went into halftime down 61-59.
Thanks to some sage advice by Mikal Bridges, they came out for the second half doing layup lines!

And, it worked. The Knicks won the third quarter 37-24 to give them an 11-point lead heading to the 4th quarter. They blew that lead, and were even down 7 at one point during the final quarter. But, they stormed back, and Jalen Brunson hit this dagger that sent the Knicks to the Eastern Conference Semifinals.

The Knicks had been bad in the third quarter all season, so it seems like the layup lines helped. It will be interesting to see if they break them out against the favored Celtics next round.
