Megan McConnell, the younger sister of Indiana Pacers point guard TJ McConnell, made her regular season debut in the WNBA with the Phoenix Mercury on Tuesday night. It did not end well.

The 23-year-old needed help off of the court with a knee injury after an awkward collision in the open court.

Megan, born in 2001, is almost 10 full years younger than her big brother. She played five impressive years at Duquesne and finished as the program’s all-time leader in games played, triple-doubles, steals and assists, second on the all-time scoring list, second in career rebounds and sixth in triples made. She averaged 18.4 points on 47% shooting, 7.2 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 4.1 steals per game as a senior. Don’t let her get hot!

McConnell did not get drafted but the Phoenix Mercury initially gave her a shot as an undrafted free agent during camp and into the preseason. The 5-foot-7 guard was able to hold her own.

Her clutch three during the preseason made the fans aware of her abilities even though Phoenix lost that specific game.

The Mercury ultimately decided not to keep Megan McConnell on its roster during the early going. It changed its mind and signed her to a rest-of-season contract earlier this week, just hours after her brother secured his first NBA Finals appearance. She made her regular season WNBA debut on Tuesday night.

It started off strong. McConnell had three points, three assists and one rebound in 13 minutes.

Unfortunately, the first game of her career came to an early end. It might also be the end of her rookie season depending on severity. Megan McConnell suffered an awkward knee injury during a collision while going for the ball. The training staff needed to help her off of the court.

The Phoenix Mercury has yet to announce an official ruling on its newly-acquired rookie but the injury did not look good. I would guess that Megan McConnell will miss some time. Meanwhile, TJ McConnell will play for an NBA Championship over the next few weeks while his little sister rests. It is a talented family!
