Wink Martindale headed back to the college level this season after his time as the defensive coordinator of the Giants came to an end after just two years, and he wasn’t shy about firing a shot at his former team while discussing his future with the Wolverines.
As is the case with virtually every football coach, Wink Martindale paid his dues at the college level before making the leap to the NFL in the mid-2000s after spending close to two decades working in various capacities for five different programs.
Martindale initially served as the linebackers coach for the Raiders and the Broncos before a brief stint as the defensive coordinator in Denver, and he spent four seasons overseeing that side of the ball for the Ravens before he lost the gig following Baltimore’s 8-9 campaign in 2021.
It didn’t take him very long to find a new home, as the New York Giants tapped Martindale to serve as the defensive coordinator under Brian Daboll prior to the start of the 2022 campaign. However, his time with the franchise came to an end when they “mutually parted ways” shortly after reports surfaced that asserted he was butting heads with the head coach.
Martindale was quickly scooped up by Sherrone Moore to step into the role of DC for the Michigan Wolverines and return to the college level for the first time in more than 20 years, and while the team has experienced the growing pains it anticipated in the wake of Jim Harbaugh’s departure, he seems to be settling in pretty well.
On Wednesday, Martindale got the chance to discuss the change of scenery while fielding a question about his long-term future with Michigan, and he couldn’t stop himself from wallowing in the misery of his former team by saying Ann Arbor is “a lot better than being in some places that are 2-7.”
