Mike Gundy is on the hot seat. Oklahoma State cannot afford another college football season where it is not at all competitive.

However, the Pokes would not be where they are today without their 22-year head coach and the recent struggles may not be entirely on his shoulders.

Regardless of how you feel toward the winningest college football coach in Oklahoma State history, we can all agree that his eldest son needs to stay off of social media. Gavin Gundy will only make things worse if he continues to express his opinion on a public platform.

Mike Gundy needs to win.

Oklahoma State hired Mike Gundy to replace Les Miles in late 2004. He had only one losing record prior to last year, in his first season. The Cowboys finished at 3-9 in 2024.

If that was not bad enough, there is not a lot of hope for the next 10 games.

Oklahoma State looked underwhelming against a bad UT Martin team in Week 1. It got mollywhopped by Oregon on Saturday.

The Pokes lost by 66.

Quarterback Zane Flores (the backup) completed only seven passes for 67 yards with two interceptions. The defense allowed the Ducks to record more than 600 yards of total offense. Yikes.

The people of Stillwater are getting restless. They are ready to move on from their head coach. Not everybody, but it’s getting there. Another losing season won’t help.

Gavin Gundy is not helping his dad’s case.

As soon as Oklahoma State lost to Oregon, Mike Gundy’s son went on a rampage in defense of his father. It started with a series of posts to his story on Instagram.

“Let’s cut the BS: Mike Gundy IS Oklahoma State football. Period. No debate. No asterisks. No ‘yeah, but.’ He is the reason this program has national respect, trophies in the case, and games worth bragging about.”

Gavin Gundy proceeded to list all of his dad’s accomplishments both as a player and as a coach.

And then he shifted his focus toward loyalty.

He closed out his rant with an ironic declaration about whiney spoiled kids with WiFi.

Everybody is entitled to their own opinion. Gavin believes in his father. That is admirable!

To attack his haters on Instagram is not. It actually serves the opposite of his intended purpose.

People who want Gundy fired are only going to get louder.

And to make matters worse, he also went after a local reporter. Carson Cunningham posted the following:

Gavin responded with a post that has since been deleted:

“Imagine being this pathetic…,” he wrote. “You will never understand the size of balls it takes to do what he does… and how Oklahoma State would be completely irrelevant without him. So you can sit there and tweet all you want but you will never know what it takes to be successful in life.”

Yikes. Not a good look.

Two things can be true at once. All of the points Gavin Gundy made about Mike Gundy’s legacy at Oklahoma State are accurate. It can still be time to move on and start a new chapter.

Regardless of which way the Cowboys decide to go, the head coach needs to get his son off of social media. The posts will only make the fanbase even more inclined to force him out.
