Mike Gundy is no longer the head college football coach at Oklahoma State. He was fired on Tuesday.
His eldest son, Gavin Gundy, posted to Instagram just a few hours later.
The currently unemployed college football coach’s son shared a wonderful tribute to his dad’s highly successful run at his alma mater. However, the optics are a lot less positive and a lot more snarky when you consider his rant from a few weeks ago.
Gavin Gundy expedited the process.
Gavin Gundy is a well-known figure within the Stillwater and greater college football community. He is one of the most vocal advocates for his father. He rarely shies away from voicing his opinion.
As admirable as that might be, his latest rant played a direct role in the Cowboys’ coaching change.
Gavin delivered a scathing rant in defense of Mike Gundy after a blowout loss to Oregon.
“Let’s cut the BS: Mike Gundy IS Oklahoma State football. Period. No debate. No asterisks […]
“Without Gundy, OSU is irrelevant. Without Gundy, you’d have NOTHING to brag about and NOTHING to cry about […] The Gundy name is bigger than your hate, bigger than your tweets, and bigger than your relevance. And if you can’t handle that, here’s what you can do: take your opinions, fold them up real nice, and shove them straight up your a–.
It was an emotional tirade that, while true to some extent, created an even bigger firestorm in a time where less silent would’ve been the better move. He also criticized people in the comments who were “whining like spoiled kids with WiFi,” which I found to be ironic given his status in society and his post.
To make matters worse, Gavin Gundy attacked a local reporter on X. Bad look.
Fortunately, somebody got ahold of him and he deleted his account on X not too long thereafter. Unfortunately, it was already too late.
Mike Gundy got fired.
To be fair to Gavin Gundy, Mike Gundy got himself fired with poor results. It was not only his son’s rant. The Oklahoma State football program is in the middle of a downward spiral. Losing will get you fired.
That is exactly what happened in Stillwater on Tuesday!
The administration decided to move on from its winningest football coach in program history. They reportedly asked him if he wanted to stick around and retire at the end of the season. He said no way.
Gavin posted on Instagram on Tuesday night to essentially memorialize his dad’s career.
It’s a nice post! A son is showing appreciation to his father.
However, he completely ruined the gesture with the rant after Eugene. I read this most recent post with every possible sprinkle of sass and salt possible because of what I read earlier in the season. Maybe that was on purpose. Who knows.
