Torpedo bats are the hot new thing in MLB. Over the weekend, the Yankees hit a franchise-record nine home runs against the Milwaukee Brewers while using their new bats, which are designed to have more wood near the bat’s label.
Michael Kay explains that the Yankees made new bats “where they moved a lot of the wood into the label so the harder part of the bat is going to strike the ball.”

The MLB’s rulebook reveals that the Yankees’ torpedo bats are legal.
“The bat shall be a smooth, round stick not more than 2.61 inches in diameter at the thickest part and not more than 42 inches in length. The bat shall be one piece of solid wood.”
According to veteran reporter Andy Slater, players are now ordering the torpedo bats in droves.
SLATER SCOOP: Many MLB players have ordered torpedo bats over the past few days after seeing the Yankees success, a @Chandlerbats rep tells me.
It takes up to four weeks for the bat to be custom made.
“We have international and high-school players reaching out too.”

ESPN MLB Insider Buster Olney reports that the Atlanta Braves have put in an order for the torpedo bats.
“And after what happened yesterday, the Braves put in an order for some of these bats,” Olney said. “[Braves catcher] Drake Baldwin actually told me that he used one of these in the Arizona Fall League last year. He said, ‘It looks weird, but if the Yankees are gonna keep hitting like that, everyone’s gonna want to do it.”
