There’s no question that 22-year-old Carson Hocevar is one of the most impressive young stars in NASCAR today. But the reigning Cup Series Rookie of the Year is also one of the most polarizing.

The Spire Motorsports driver has racked up an impressive eight top-10 finishes thus far this season, including a pair of runner-up finishes at Atlanta and Nashville.

But on the other side of the coin, Hocevar has made few friends on track, and he’s also racked up $150,000 in fines from both NASCAR and his team.

Most recently, Hocevar was fined $50,000 by NASCAR for revving his engine and spinning his tires while safety workers tried to hook his damaged vehicle up to a tow truck during last Sunday’s race at Kansas. NASCAR ruled that Hocevar’s behavior endangered the safety workers surrounding the car, and it’s hard to argue with their reasoning.

But Hocevar quickly came up with a plan to pay off the fine.

During a Twitch stream on Wednesday afternoon, Hocevar posted a $50,000 fundraising goal. Shortly after posting the goal, donations began to pour in.

There’s no indication that Hocevar was able to raise the entire $50,000, or anything close. But hey, every little bit helps.

His latest stunt, albeit one that is far less controversial, comes just months after Spire Motorsports fined him $50,000 for xenophobic comments he made about Mexico City ahead of the Cup Series’ race south of the border.

Hocevar later issued an apology for the comments.

“Maybe a kid that had never been out of the country until Thursday should (n)ever give an opinion about what any place is like other than Portage, Michigan,” Hocevar said of the comments.

Hate him or love him, it’s clear that Hocever has both a big personality and the talent to match. If he can just keep his head on straight, he could well be the next big star that NASCAR has been dying to uncover.
