NASCAR Truck Series driver Stewart Friesen is in the hospital and thankfully in stable condition after a horrifying crash on Monday night. Friesen suffered a broken pelvis and broken leg after a fiery crash during a DIRTCar Series race at Autodrome Drummond in Canada.

A terrifying video of the incident shows Friesen’s car strike the outside retaining wall before flipping and landing upside down on the wall. The second impact set the car on fire and he was then hit again by another driver trying to avoid the incident.

Somehow, thankfully, Friesen was alert and communicating with safety workers when they arrived on the scene. He was immediately and safely extracted from the car before being transported to a local hospital.

Friesen’s wife Jess, who also races, gave fans a positive update on his status on Tuesday morning.

“As many of you know by now, Stewart was involved in a multi-car accident at Autodrome Drummond in Quebec, Canada last night,” the update begins. “CT scans have come back clear of any head, neck, or spine injuries. Unfortunately, he is still in a tremendous amount of pain.

“Stewart has suffered an unstable/open-book pelvic fracture, meaning his pelvis is broken in two or more places, with a large hematoma in the area. Stewart also has a fractured right leg. Both of these injuries will require surgery. Stewart was transferred to a larger hospital this morning for these procedures.”

Friesen, 42, is a Canadian native and the co-owner of the Halmar Friesen Racing team that he competes for. He has four wins in his truck series career, including one at Michigan International Speedway this season to lock himself into the NASCAR Truck Series playoffs.

However, Friesen’s injuries almost assuredly mean he will not race for the rest of the season, if not longer. If that’s the case, the team can replace him and still run for an owner’s championship in the series.

Halmar Friesen Racing has not yet addressed the matter.
