Army football coach Jeff Monken fueled a rivalry fire with Navy midway through the college football season. The Black Knights’ leader shaded his military academy nemesis while appearing on the Pat McAfee Show earlier this week.
After hearing the comments, the Midshipmen fired back by pulling receipts of Monken’s past coaching stops. It’s only added to the anticipation of what’s expected to be an important season-ending matchup!
Both Army and Navy are undefeated to this point, sliding into the Top 25 of the AP Poll. The Knights are 6-0, including a spotless 5-0 mark in conference play to put them at the top of the league standings.
The Midshipmen aren’t far behind at 5-0 (3-0) on the year.
While the game is still weeks away from being played, it’s always top of mind for those in Annapolis and West Point. This year, more so than in seasons past!
Should each school continue upon its undefeated path, an unprecedented situation could be seen.
The Army-Navy rivalry game is scheduled for the season’s final week. It comes as a standalone matchup after conference championships have wrapped up.
With both programs moving away from independence and into the American Athletic Conference, they could theoretically play in back-to-back weeks – one of which decides the regular season league champ and another that decides rivalry bragging rights.
Throw in the fact that those outcomes could also have College Football Playoff implications surrounding the lone Group of Five bid, and this could be the most important Army-Navy game in recent memory.
Army’s Jeff Monken was asked about the possible scenario this week. He took the moment to troll Navy!
“Does [Navy] still have a football program?”

This rivalry!!
While Monken jabbed his upcoming opponent, he’s plenty familiar with the Navy football program. In fact, he was once a Midshipman!
The Navy social media team reminded him of that past while combatting his shady comments. They hit him with the receipts!
Monken served as an assistant in Annapolis between 2002-2007 before going onto become a head coach.

Both teams still need to continue their on-field success in order to set up the back-to-back matchups, and each still has a game vs. Notre Dame on the slate to gauge their true CFP contention.
We’ll see if the Black Knights and Midshipmen can make the possibility a reality. It’s setting up to be a spicy rivalry contest in Maryland!
