NBA: Championship Parade

Continuing a trend that seemed to take hold during the NBA Finals, the Oklahoma City Thunder’s championship parade on Tuesday, June 24 produced some embarrassing scenes. The Thunder overcame the Indiana Pacers in Game 7 on Sunday.

During the course of the Finals, the NBA was roasted for a variety of presentation-related shortcomings, such as the pregame intros, the decals on the court, and the cheap championship gear that was given to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Even videos of Thunder players celebrating their long-awaited championship seemed subdued compared to the other major American sports.

That trend continued into the Thunder’s parade, as videos of sparsely populated crowds and fans observing from behind chainlink fences went viral on social media.

By the conclusion of the parade, the Oklahoma City Police Department estimated that approximately 500,000 people participated along the ten-block parade route, plus in and around Scissortail Park downtown.

“They got Thunder fans in the same fence as the first 3 seasons of The Walking Dead,” one viral tweet joked.

“This is about the size crowd of a Kyle Kuzma meet and greet ngl,” cracked another.

“Weird Prison parade. Everything about the Thunder championship celebration is bizarre,” a third lamented.

The Oklahoma City Thunder overcame the Indiana Pacers in seven games to win the franchise’s first championship since they were the Seattle SuperSonics in 1979.
