College football fans who cheer for Oklahoma State are not happy with Mike Gundy for more reason than one. Not only are the Cowboys near the bottom of the Big 12 standings at 3-6, their head coach (not so) accidentally swiped at the financial standing of his program’s supporters.

They do not accept his heedless apology!

Oklahoma State had pretty high hopes for the 20th season of the Gundy era. Running back Ollie Gordon was supposed to be a Heisman Trophy frontrunner and seventh-year quarterback Alan Bowman returned as the starter with a year of experience in the offense already under his belt. At the very least, the Cowboys were supposed to reach or get close to their 10-win record from a year ago.

That is not going to happen. Gundy needs to win out against TCU, Colorado and Texas Tech if he is going to salvage the season. Otherwise, the Pokes are going to miss out on a bowl game for the first time since his very first year at the helm in 2005. Yikes.

Fans are mad at Mike Gundy!

There are a lot of things to blame for this team’s failures. Its head coach decided to take it out on the fans with a targeted rant about their wealth— or, rather, a lack thereof. He referred to critics, of which there are many, as weak and poor.

Unfortunately, in life, most people are weak. As soon as things start to not go as good as what they thought, they fall apart […]

In most cases, the people who are negative and voicing their opinions are the same ones that can’t pay their own bills. They’re not taking care of themselves; they’re not taking care of their own family.

— Mike Gundy on Nov. 3

Even if Gundy might have a small point, that is not something a head coach should say out loud. His comments were even less productive considering the current state of his program. It’s not like a small portion of the fanbase is frustrated. Quite literally every single fan of Oklahoma State is upset with the worst start — and potentially worst season — of the last two decades.

Mike Gundy, presumably after a strong nudge from the athletic department’s PR folk, issued an apology. However, he did so through a deficient statement written out on the iPhone’s Notes app.

The apology from a man who referred to others as weak, was weak, and Cowboys fans do not accept. They lashed out in response to the team’s posts on social media.

For example, here are some of the responses to the above post:

  • “Sorry I’m too poor and behind on my bills”
  • “I live in DFW and would go to this game but Gundy said I’m a failure who can’t pay my bills so I guess I can’t afford to go”
  • “Sorry I’m a broke loser I can’t attend.”
  • “I’m an OSU alum and U.S. army NCO. But Mike Gundy said I can’t pay my bills (never missed a payment and I proudly support my family) so I guess I can’t afford to attend this game. Good luck Cowboys. This Sergeant is staying home.”
  • “Dam, can’t afford any streaming service let alone a ticket! Better go get another job so I can pay my bills and criticize an 0-6 conference team!”
  • “My parents are both TCU alumni. It’s normally a game we all go to, but I guess this year I’m too poor”
  • “I’ll watch the rest of the games this year, but I don’t think I’m going to be able to afford that season ticket renewal bill next year.”
  • “I make minimum wage, sorry”
  • “My cable just got cut off because I’m behind on bills. Good luck tho”

The responses in response to the team’s teaser video were even more ruthless.

For example:

  • “I live 20 minutes from TCU’s stadium and still can’t afford the gas to go after paying my bills, can Gundy order me an Uber??”
  • “Are tickets free? I’m poor”
  • “I’m too poor to go sadly”
  • “I’m too poor to afford to watch this game”
  • “I’ll be busy failing my wife and children. Sorry”
  • “Is there a net worth requirement to attend?”
  • “Sorry too poor to make it. Can Gundy spot me a ticket? I won’t be paying him back since I’m a deadbeat who can’t pay his bills”
  • “Maybe I can use my EBT card for tickets 🤷‍♂️ Kids will just have to go without food for a week or so.”
  • “Could you, maybe, spare a little extra cash?”
  • “I sold my grandfather’s war medals to attend this game”
  • “Sending you my QR code for gas money. Thanks in advance.”
  • “Maybe one day I’ll be able to pay my bills, take care of my family, AND take exotic trips to Texas. But alas…..”
  • “I never realized until recently with my financial status I should have been a Cowboy learned to rope and ride wearing my six shooter on a cattle drive.”
  • “I for one am rich and see no problems with this program”
  • “Sorry, I bought season tickets, and apparently, since I don’t like how the coaches are not preparing our players, I am too broke to come to games or support anymore.”

You get the idea. Those kinds of responses are endless and even Hall of Fame running back Thurman Thomas had a laugh at the replies!

Needless to say, Oklahoma State fans do not accept Mike Gundy’s apology. It will be interesting to see how the crowd responds when the Cowboys return to Stillwater next weekend. Will they even show up?
