Lane Kiffin will not be the head football coach at Ole Miss in 2026. He is instead off to SEC rival LSU.
News of a coaching change was announced to the team during a meeting that Kiffin was not allowed to attend. Players celebrated upon learning of his replacement.
Defensive coordinator Pete Golding will lead the team into the College Football Playoff. His head coaching title is permanent as he intends to coach the Rebels into 2026 and beyond.
“We could not be more excited to announce Pete Golding as the next head coach of the Ole Miss Rebels. His tenure will begin immediately as he leads our program in the pursuit of a national title. Today’s team meeting was a clear indicator of his ability to galvanize our squad. All of our players and coaches are ecstatic and ready to lock arms for a playoff run.”
Golding has been with the program since 2023. Across those three seasons, his defensive units have shined.
Kiffin informed Ole Miss of his intentions to bail for LSU on Sunday. He reportedly gave his coaching staff an ultimatum soon thereafter.
Lane Kiffin has lined up most of his offensive staff to join him at LSU, [Chris Low of On3] reports. He’s told them if they’re not on the plane to Baton Rouge today, they won’t have a spot on staff.

Leaked audio from a team meeting was posted to social media. The Rebels are excited to have Golding leading the charge.
Cheers from players and staff echoed throughout the facility upon learning of the coaching change. Kiffin is out. Golding is in.
While the exit is certainly disappointing given the heights Ole Miss football has reached, the Rebs are more than confident in their replacement’s abilities.
Video of the meeting was later made public.

Lane Kiffin was not allowed to say goodbye.
The coach was not allowed in the team meeting before departing for Baton Rouge. Marty Smith of ESPN caught up with Kiffin at the airport.
“I totally respect Keith [Carter]’s decision,” the coach said before boarding his plane. “He asked me not to come to the meeting, which I totally understand. I don’t know that I necessarily agree… but he has to live here and it’s a little different when you’re the AD.”

“We were trying to find a way to make this work and coach the team, give them the best chance to win…Maybe all the national people understand why he should let me coach, but he has to live here and it’s a little different when you’re the AD..”… pic.twitter.com/xNh9OsMJUz

Ole Miss felt disrespected by Lane Kiffin. The Rebels are moving on as quickly as possible. Pete Golding will get his first opportunity to lead his team in the College Football Playoff.
