If you’re going to make a joke at the expense of WNBA superstar Paige Bueckers, you’d better be ready for backlash from her scores of fans. Unfortunately for William Flanary, who goes by the pseudonym Dr. Glaucomflecken on X, he learned that lesson the hard way.

Flanary is both an ophthalmologist – a doctor specializing in eye and vision care, not to be confused with an optometrist – and a comedian. So when Flanary saw Bueckers sarcastically offering a WNBA referee the use of her glasses to get a call right, he also saw an opening.

Paige Bueckers Fans Did NOT Like Joke About Her Prescription Glasses

“Nobody asked, but she’s a -1, maybe a -1.5,” he said in reply to a video of the incident.

Flanary was, of course, referring to Bueckers’ prescription for her glasses. But WNBA fans are often, rightfully, extremely defensive of players and assumed that Flanary was making a comment about Bueckers’ physical appearance.

So as you can imagine, the replies to his comment were pretty ugly!

“You better be talking about eyeballs bc nobody talks about my wife like that,” one fan wrote.

But that wasn’t the worst of it. In fact, it wasn’t even close to the worst of it.

And you’re a sellout who does whatever your daddy medical organization tells you to,” another Bueckers fan wrote, while one fan missed the joke so badly that they told Flanary that he was going to die alone!

Thankfully, Flanary is aware his brand of comedy doesn’t always land with everyone.

Ok I probably could have phrased this a little better,” he posted with a picture of the vitriolic replies to his initial joke. He also stated that he wasn’t even trying to joke, but rather enjoys trying to guess glasses prescriptions, and he’s actually really good at it!

But let this be a warning, if you’re going to have some fun at the expense of a WNBA player, you’d better be ready for the incredible backlash that is going to come your way.
