Pat Shurmur has officially been demoted as the Colorado football team’s offensive coordinator. His play calling duties have reportedly been stripped.
The move comes after a concerning clip circulated social media from the Buffs‘ 53-7 loss to Utah. Deion Sanders Jr. put Shurmur on blast!
Whether or not that public attention was intentional is unknown. Regardless, it’s become even more of a talking point given the recent staff shakeup.
Colorado has one of college football’s worst offense.
The group has left much to be desired thus far in the 2025 season. The Buffs have eclipsed 24 points just twice with none coming in Big 12 Conference play.
Pat Shurmur joined the staff in 2023. He was elevated to offensive coordinator midway through his first season.
In 2024, Colorado boasted one of the sport’s best units, averaging about 33 points per game while producing a Heisman trophy winner.
Much has changed over the last few months.
In 2025, Colorado ranks 108th nationally in scoring. They’re 107th in yardage. They’ve struggled to both run and throw the football.
It’s led to a 3-6 output through the squad’s first nine games, including a 1-6 mark in league play. Deion Sanders believed it was time to make a change.
Colorado football coach Deion Sanders stripped play-calling duties from offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur after the Buffaloes lost at Utah Oct. 25, demoting him to quarterbacks coach before the team got beat again last week against Arizona, a person with knowledge of the situation told USA TODAY Sports.
Tight ends coach and passing game coordinator Brett Bartolone reportedly assumed play calling duties.
Deion Sanders’ son put Pat Shurmur on blast.
A clip was posted to Deion Sanders Jr’s Well Off Media showing Shurmur struggle to get a call down from the booth to signal caller Ryan Staub.
That play was a simple quarterback sneak.
The video of Shurmur’s communication quickly went viral. Criticism was only compounded by another clip seemingly showing Colorado QB Kaidon Salter question an incoming play call.

It’s been a bad season for the Colorado football team. The Utah loss was apparently the last straw for Pat Shurmur. He will no longer guide the Buffs’ offense. We’ll see if the change makes any difference over the last few games.
