Patrick Mahomes made a point to shake hands with every skill player on the Kansas City Chiefs after the Super Bowl on Sunday night. However, he completely skipped over Samaje Perine.
The optics were terrible even though the incredible awkward snub was likely unintentional.
Perine, 29, signed with the Kansas City Chiefs during the offseason after eight NFL seasons with Washington, Cincinnati, Miami and Denver. Although he only recorded 414 yards and two touchdowns on 48 total touches during the regular season, his first down against the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship was one of the most important plays of the entire year.

Mahomes was pumped at the time.

Fast forward to Sunday. Perine had only one carry for eight yards but it was actually the longest run by any player on the team. Mahomes finished with 25 yards on four carries. Kareem Hunt had nine yards on three carries. Isiah Pacheco had seven yards on three carries.
As soon as the game was completely out of reach late in the fourth quarter, Mahomes worked his way down the sideline to show love to his teammates. He dapped up JuJu Smith-Schuster, Hollywood Brown and Pacheco in that order.
Perine was up next. The running back even stood up to greet his quarterback.
Mahomes completely dissed him. He did not even acknowledged his existence and skipped right over Perine to hug Travis Kelce. Perine waited patiently. His moment never came.
It was really bizarre. Patrick Mahomes never looked at Samaje Perine and actively looked past him while mid-hug with Kelce.

This was probably a misunderstanding. As far as we know, there is not any reason to believe it was an intentional snub due to behind-the-scenes beef or anything like that. Still. That neither changes how the awkward cold-shoulder looks nor explains why it happened. Samaje Perine stood up directly in front of Patrick Mahomes and reached out his hand. He was right there!
