The 2024/25 college basketball season will get underway in just a few weeks so Rick Pitino is back in Queens to coach St. John’s. He brought his dog with him to practice on Wednesday and it did not go well.
Gigi peed all over the court!
Pitino drew inspiration from Kirk Herbstreit’s dog, Ben. Herbstreit started bringing Ben on the road with him last season. The 10-year-old golden retriever travels to Thursday Night Football, College Gameday and whatever primetime game ESPN chooses for its Saturday night primetime broadcast.
For example, Ben will travel from New Orleans to Cincinnati to Austin this weekend.
First stop New Orleans (favorite city for food) for @NFLonPrime @Saints @Broncos w/ 2 rookie QB’s going head to head. My son’s game in Cincy-Go Bombers!bAnd one of the GAMES OF THE YEAR in CFB in Austin @TexasFootball @GeorgiaFootball pic.twitter.com/TDbwcbgpBP

He often joins Herbstreit on the field before games and rolls around at the 50-yard-line. There have been a few instances where he even made his way into the broadcast booth. Nobody ever complains about having him around. He’s never had an accident on the playing field or anything like that.
And yet there are a lot of people out there who, for some unknown reason, want Ben off of their television screens. They don’t want to see an adorable pup (who is actively fighting cancer) in the broadcast booth or on the field. They want him to stay home.
Al Michaels made those folks look as stupid as they sound and ended the debate on Ben. If someone as surly as he can enjoy having such a well-behaved dog around, then anyone who disagrees is wrong.
In fact, dogs should be more welcome in atypical places and Rick Pitino is on board with that line of thinking!
The 72-year-old drew inspiration from Herbstreit. If Ben can travel all over the country almost every weekend, surely his own dog could handle one single practice at Taffner Fieldhouse. Right?
Wrong. Gigi was unable to handle even one single practice.
She peed all over the hardwood.
Took a page from @KirkHerbstreit and took my Gigi to practice. What a disaster-peed all over the basketball court -never again 🤦🏼♂️ pic.twitter.com/zilAp1jEZ0

Maybe not every dog is cut out for the lifestyle. Gigi will not soon be back on the court with St. John’s but she still deserves all of the boops!
