Reigning Masters champion and 2-time PGA champion Rory McIlroy took the podium for his press conference at Quail Hollow on Wednesday and was asked about not speaking to Bryson DeChambeau on the course during the final round at The Masters. Rory basically laughed at the notion that he would speak to Bryson under those circumstances.
This entire story was blown out of proportion after the conclusion of the final round of The Masters when Bryson DeChambeau told reporters that Rory didn’t speak to him on the course. Anyone who ever watched Tiger Woods win a tournament knows that Tiger never spoke to his competition. Rory is one of the most affable golfers in the world but he’s still a competitor like Tiger. Talking is not expected.
So when Rory McIlroy took the podium and was asked about not speaking to Bryson DeChambeau and Bryson’s comments, Rory scoffed and said “I don’t know what he was expecting.” Rory could’ve stopped there. That’s more than enough explanation. But he continued.
Rory went on to say “I mean, we’re trying to win The Masters. I’m not going to try and be hist best mate, I think” while laughing. He continued, saying “everyone approaches the game in different ways, and yeah, I was focused on myself and what I needed to do and that’s really all that it was. It wasn’t anything against him, I felt that’s what I needed to do to try to get the best out of myself that day.”
