The Ohio State football team won its first national championship since 2014 on Monday night by besting Notre Dame in Atlanta. Head coach Ryan Day was overcome with joy when the clocks hit 0:00.

It was a moment of relief for Day, who’d dealt with nothing but negativity leading into the College Football Playoff. He was able to redeem himself with an incredible postseason run.

The Buckeyes lost their season finale to archrival Michigan in late November. That defeat kept them out of the Big Ten Championship and eliminated the possibility of a first-round playoff bye.

After his fourth straight loss in the rivalry series, fans began to turn. The coach’s wife admitted to receiving death threats, while a very loud portion of the fanbase called for Day’s removal.

Throughout it all, AD Ross Bjork stayed by Day’s side. That encouragement and belief in his head coach paid immediate dividends.

The Buckeyes capped a dominant postseason run with a fourth consecutive double-digit victory. They took down four Top 10 teams along the way.

No longer was the narrative, “Ryan Day can’t beat Michigan.” It was, “The Buckeyes are national champions.”

Overcome with emotion, the coach launched his headset into the crowd when the game ended. It had some velocity behind it!

Another angle gives a better view of just how far Day tossed his equipment. Viewers are still wondering where it landed.

In his postgame press conference, the coach commented on the moment. He says he blacked out. He didn’t even remember doing it. He was just happy to get the win.

“I threw my headset, I don’t know where that came from. I look back and I forgot I even did that. I don’t know what that reaction was.”

Day says the win brought peace to his family and his team. It offered redemption when many doubted. He can now celebrate a championship season after quieting the negativity that previously surrounded him.
