South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers announced himself as a genuine Heisman Trophy candidate in the Gamecocks’ Week 1 victory over Virginia Tech.

And in doing so, Sellers also broke a 49-year-old curse first started by former “Remember The Titans” star “Sunshine” Ronnie Bass. That’s right, the victory over the Hokies was the first for South Carolina in the city of Atlanta since Bass led the Gamecocks to a victory over Georgia Tech in 1976.

‘Remember The Titans’ Subject Ronnie Bass Balled Out For South Carolina

That’s right. Bass, who is the star QB for T.C. Williams in the iconic 2000 film, was also a star quarterback in real life. He went on to play quarterback on scholarship for South Carolina and was a four-year letterwinner.

Bass played in 45 career games and started at quarterback his junior and senior year. His best performance, however, came as a sophomore when he ran the ball 39 times for 211 yards and two touchdowns in a 31–23 upset victory over rival North Carolina

LaNorris Sellers Looks Like A Superstar For The Gamecocks

While Bass had a solid enough career in Columbia, he certainly wasn’t a superstar. Sellers, however, looks like just that.

The 6-foot-3, 240-pound signal caller is one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in the country, and he performed up to that billing against Virginia Tech.

The South Carolina native completed 12-of-19 passes for 209 yards and a touchdown and had an additional 25 yards and one touchdown on the ground.

While he’s still just scratching the surface of his ability as a passer, Sellers is the type of quarterback that could lead the Gamecocks into contention not just for an SEC championship, but for a national championship as well.
