There is literally no limit to the ways smugglers will attempt to get their drugs into the United States. They will try just about anything. Unfortunately for them, their ideas aren’t always the best and they end up losing millions of dollars worth of their product. Case in point: a tractor trailer hauling soft drinks was busted at the Texas border when almost $3 million worth of cocaine was found concealed within the shipment.
Texas CBP agents do it again
The massive drug seizure occurred on July 28 at the Roma International Bridge in Texas when U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Office of Field Operations officers were checking out the tractor trailer and chose to pull it aside for a secondary inspection. After a canine team was called in and resulted in an alert, the CBP agents physically examined the shipment and discovered 73 packages containing a total of 212.30 pounds of alleged cocaine concealed within it.
CBP officers then seized the cocaine, which had an estimated street value of $2,834,686, the tractor, and the trailer. Homeland Security Investigations special agents then initiated a criminal investigation.
“This substantial seizure of cocaine stands as a testament to the dedication and effectiveness of our officers in disrupting illegal smuggling and securing the border,” said Port Director Andres Guerra, Roma Port of Entry.

Another smuggler busted
Just two days earlier, on July 26, Customs and Border Protection agents at the Hidalgo International Bridge in Texas made a huge drug bust of their own. There, the CBP officers seized more than $1 million worth of cocaine from a 2020 Renault Oroch after a canine inspection resulted in an alert and a nonintrusive imaging system scan revealed anomalies within the vehicle.
A total of 30 packages containing 76.94 pounds of alleged cocaine with an estimated street value of $1,027,316 was discovered hidden within the vehicle.
“This substantial cocaine seizure reflects the strong dedication of our officers to safeguarding the border, as well as their skillful use of experience and technology,” said Port Director Carlos Rodriguez, Hidalgo Port of Entry.

Earlier this month, Texas CBP agents caught another drug smuggler trying to hide over $15 million worth of meth inside a shipment of carrots! Much like when smugglers tried using papayas, tomatillos, lettuce, cucumbers, bell peppers, limes, and squash, their plans were thwarted.
