U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers caught yet another smuggler trying to sneak millions of dollars worth of illegal drugs into the country last week. This time, the CBP agents at the Laredo Port of Entry in Texas seized cocaine valued at more than $4.4 million that was hidden within a tractor-trailer.

The 2022 Pinnacle tractor-trailer was attempting to gain entry into the United States from Mexico at the World Trade Bridge in Laredo. While doing so, a CBP officer checking the truck referred the vehicle for a secondary inspection involving a canine team and a nonintrusive inspection system examination.

During that search that the agents discovered and seized 144 packages containing a total of 335.10 pounds of alleged cocaine with a street value of $4,474,272.

“Our frontline CBP officers remain dedicated to CBP’s border security mission and that dedication and application of technology and inspection experience led to this significant cocaine seizure,” said Port Director Alberto Flores, Laredo Port of Entry. “Seizures like these reflect the reality of the drug threat we face on a daily basis and our resolve to maintain a robust enforcement posture to interdict this poison and prevent it from reaching U.S. streets.”

Millions worth of illegal drugs seized by CBP officers

That massive drug bust was the second large seizure performed by CBP officers at the Laredo Port of Entry in a span of just seven days. On Thursday, Sept. 25 at the World Trade Bridge, a CBP officer referred a 2025 Kenworth tractor hauling a trailer with a shipment of stone bricks for secondary inspection.

After an examination using a canine team and nonintrusive inspection system, CBP officers discovered 206.79 pounds of alleged cocaine with a street value of $2,761,096. That drug seizure came less than 24 hours after CBP officers discovered two separate shipments containing a total of 9.92 pounds of alleged methamphetamine with a street value of $91,224 hidden inside a 2025 Freightliner truck.

Drug smugglers are sneaky, but not always sneaky enough

As Donald R. Kusser, the Director, Field Operations, for the CBP Laredo Field Office, wrote in a post on X last week, “Hide it how you want – we’ll still find it.” He’s not lying.
