Tom Brady must have some spare time on his hands this NFL offseason because he is trying something new: instructional videos. For his first effort, TB12 is teaching everyone “How to Throw a Football.”

“This video is exactly what it sounds like! Let’s learn how to throw a football (or anything else),” Tom Brady writes in the video’s description. “I was lucky to have a ton of incredible coaches and mentors throughout my career, and this is the simplest explanation of everything that I learned. It worked for me, but it’s the same principles you can use all the way down to pee-wee rec leagues.”

Brady created the video in conjunction with a company called Veritasium, which, according to their website, is “a YouTube channel about science with over 17.7 million subscribers and over 3 billion views, winner of the Streamy award for Science or Education in 2017.”

“This video could be around a long time,” Brady says in the video after being told that they were creating “the definitive YouTube guide to how to
throw a football.”

As Tom Brady explains, throwing “will always start with your legs and getting the power from the ground.”

“Through your ankles, through your knees, through your hips, through your shoulders, into your right arm,” he continued. “Once you get the energy traveling up from the ground, you don’t want any of that energy to go anywhere except to the fingertips and the ball and at the release point so you can drive the football.”

Tom Brady goes on to talk about proper balance and the stride, comparing it to loading a golf swing, a baseball swing or a hockey slapshot. He then discusses how to get torque on your throws to create more power. Of course, he goes into greater detail in the video on each mechanic.

He then shared the things he sees younger players doing that he doesn’t like, as well as some other common mistakes he sees players make when throwing.

All in all, it’s a pretty enlightening video on a topic that on the surface appears pretty simple.

The video also features Tom Brady sharing who he believes are the most “talented” arms in NFL history, as well as few of what he thinks are the best throws from his Hall of Fame NFL career.
