Florida State will open its college football season in Tallahassee against Alabama. Transfer quarterback Tommy Castellanos will lead the offense in his Seminole debut.
The passer spoke with former FSU passer EJ Manuel ahead of that matchup with the Crimson Tide. Castellanos looked tiny next to his interviewer.
A bad camera angle might’ve played a role, but the notable size difference between the Florida State signal callers was evident. It has many worried about his immediate future!
How tall is Tommy Castellanos?
The passer is listed at 5-foot-11 on the Florida State athletic website. His 247 Sports recruiting bio, however, suggests that he’s closer to 5-foot-9.
Castellanos is the shortest quarterback on the Seminoles‘ roster. Each of his four competitors in the QB room stands over six feet.
That size has been viewed as a limitation in his outlook under center. He often has to create his own windows when finding receivers down the field.
Castellanos is a smaller quarterback in the 5-foot-9 range that relies on escapability and pocket manipulation to find clear passing lanes to deliver. He capitalizes on scramble plays but has the arm to deliver effectively when he has clear vision.
Fans aren’t confident in his ability to do so against his next opponent.
Alabama’s defensive line is massive.
Tommy Castellanos spoke with EJ Manuel in August to preview his first game against the Crimson Tide. The former Florida State quarterback dwarfed the current!

Manuel is a large human being. He’s been listed in the 6-foot-4 to 6-foot-5 range. He has more than a few inches on Castellanos.
Aiding in the drastic size difference was a bad camera angle. Manuel was much closer to the lens. It made him look larger. Nonetheless, Castellanos’s height became a talking point!
“I thought this was AI, he looks 5′ 4″,” one follower said. “He’s so little,” wrote another.
Alabama is first up on the Florida State schedule. The Tide’s defensive front averages 6-foot-4 and 295 pounds. That size could prove difficult to see past in the pocket.
Castellanos will likely have to get creative in the passing game. It’s something he’ll have to get used to as matchups vs. Miami, Clemson, and Florida will follow.
