As the 2024 college football season nears its completion, Colorado Buffaloes star Travis Hunter has surged to the lead in the Heisman Trophy conversation. Hunter appears to hold a slim lead over Ashton Jeanty of Boise State and Cam Ward of Miami. But he helped his case against on Saturday.

The two-way superstar made a remarkable interception against Utah after the ball deflected off a Utes wide receiver. After a short return, Hunter celebrated by hitting Desmond Howard’s iconic Heisman pose.

However, officials didn’t seem to love the celebration as much as fans did as they flagged Hunter for a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. As you can imagine, neither Hunter his the fans were too happy with the flag.

“Big 12 officials want to eject Travis Hunter. Not sure how that’s unsportsmanlike unless there was a taunt not shown,” one fan wrote.

“What did Travis Hunter do that was unsportsmanlike? Was it the ball throw,” asked another.”
There’s still a lot of football left to be played before Hunter, or anyone else for that matter, can lay claim to the Heisman Trophy. But Hunter already knows what he’s going to do when (if?) he wins it.

“I’m gonna wear a watch,” he said recently when asked by teammate Shedeur Sanders about his acceptance speech plans. “Just for you, bro… Just so I can hit your [pose]. And I’ve gotta shout out the team, bro, because without the team, we couldn’t get as far and I couldn’t get no individual award.

“Somebody asked me yesterday, ‘Would you rather go to the College Football Playoff or win the Heisman?’ The first thing I said was College Football Playoff. Heisman’s gonna come if we get to the CFP. We gotta get there first.”

Does that seem a bit presumptive? Yes. But it’s hard to argue with Hunter’s confidence when he’s making big plays week after week for the Buffs.
