The basketball season for the North Carolina Tar Heels has not been up to the lofty standards of those in and around Chapel Hill. The preseason top-ten team is probably on the outside looking at the moment of the NCAA Tournament bubble, far below the standards of one of the true blue bloods in all of college basketball.

But, if you were a Carolina student at the Dean E. Smith Center on Wednesday watching UNC demolish rival North Carolina State, you had a great time. You had an even better time when it was announced that classes for Thursday were canceled due to weather.

UNC (16-11, 9-6) has played themselves out of the top bracket predictions, though they remain in and around the Next Four Out. Guards RJ Davis and Elliot Cadeau were supposed to form one of the best backcourt duos in America, Seth Trimble was supposed to be a great army knife, and five-star freshman Drake Powell and Ian Jackson were supposed to add athleticism to the roster. But, the biggest issue has been the lack of frontcourt play. Carolina’s bigs have struggled all year, and that has cost them. They were embarrassed by Duke a few weeks ago, and many are calling for Hubert Davis’s job.

That being said, they have everything to play for still ,and they took care of business against a struggling NC State team on Wednesday night. Carolina led 54-26 at halftime and cruised home for a 97-73 win. The Chapel Hill era saw some snowfall on Wednesday, leading UNC officials to announce an open ticket policy for the game. If you could make it to the Dean Dome you were allowed in.

Chapel Hill saw three inches of snowfall as of 7PM Wednesday. If you’re from a snowy part of the country, that may not seem like much. But, areas like that aren’t equipped in more than a few ways to handle the snow. So, that level of snowfall presents significant challenges.

That led to this announcement at the Dean Dome.

Enjoy your snow day, Tar Heels!
