Vanderbilt senior Jada Brown was invited to attend the women’s college basketball program’s most recent recruiting dinner. She ate like royalty at Jeff Ruby’s Steakhouse in Nashville.
The final bill cost no less than $5,000!
I did not know active college basketball players are allowed to attend these kinds of events but I guess the NIL era changed everything so food is no longer an issue. The Commodores most certain did not go hungry.
Who was invited to Vanderbilt’s recruiting dinner?
Jada Brown, a fourth-year senior, was one of four athletes who got to attend the dinner. She was joined by rising senior Aga Makurat, freshman Aubrey Galvan and fifth-year grad student Sacha Washington.
The goal of this dinner was to show some of the top college basketball recruits in the country why they should pick Vanderbilt. It is unclear as to who was in town, but no less than 12 people were at the table.
They actually started the afternoon with a party bus on Lower Broadway!
From there, it was off to Jeff Ruby’s Steakhouse. There are seven locations across Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee. The Nashville location opened in 2016.
Steak is obviously the headliner on the Jeff Ruby’s menu. It features 10 different cuts at $65 or greater and six selections of wagyu beef.

However, the prominent luxury restaurant also serves sushi, things like crab cakes and pork chops, and even features an expansive raw bar. The cocktail and wine lists are just as expansive.
What did the Commodores eat at Jeff Ruby’s?
Brown said it best: “Get your mind right, because however much you thought she ate, she actually ate more.” They spared no expense!
The appetizer round featured a crab cake, charbroiled oysters, jumbo shrimp, wagyu meatballs, lobster tail, parmesan fries, sushi, plenty of bread and a full caesar salad. That was just the first round!
From there, it was time for the main course. Jada Brown ordered a filet mignon, cooked medium.
Vanderbilt ordered a bunch of sides for the table to go with their entrées. Its senior guard chowed down on the mac and cheese, Brussels sprouts and mashed potatoes. The Commodores also got three different cuts of wagyu steak from three different countries to pass around and taste— just for fun.
It was then time for dessert! The highlight was a chocolate ice cream cake in the shape of a Louis Vuitton sneaker. Brown says the carrot cake and cheesecake were delicious as well.
Everybody at the table left with a to-go box full of leftovers!
If we are to do the math, Brown’s meal alone cost approximately $455. Mind you, some of the things she ate were shareables, so it is not an exact science. But if we are to multiply that individual number by 10, we’re looking at a bill of at least $4,500. And that number might actually be a low ball estimate because it does not include dessert or drinks!
