The Virginia basketball team hosted ACC rival Duke on Monday night in Charlottesville. It ended up being a frustrated evening for the home team, who fell by double digits.
The Blue Devils dominated from start to finish, leading the final 35 minutes of play after grabbing an early advantage. That lead grew to as many as 27 in the second half before the Cavs made the score a bit more respectable late.
One Virginia supporter wouldn’t catch the end of the 80-62 defeat. He was tossed before the halftime break! The fan said something to referee Roger Ayers, who stopped play to have him removed from the stands.
The fan was an older gentleman sharply dressed in a sweater and slacks. He didn’t put up much of a fight after the ejection decision. It seems he knew he crossed a line.
He also didn’t appear to be too upset with the early exit. After unloading on the officiating crew, the man was seen high-fiving other patrons as he made his way out of the arena.
At the time, the score was 34-22 in favor Duke with just over five minutes remaining in the first half. Things would get worse before they got better.
The loss continued what’s been a season of struggles for the Cavaliers. After seeing head coach Tony Bennett unexpectedly retire weeks before the opener, the Virginia basketball team has posted a 13-13 record. That includes a 6-9 mark in ACC play, putting them in the bottom half of the league with five regular season games to play.
This fan saw enough in Virginia’s most recent loss. The Cavaliers will try to get back in the win column on Saturday against North Carolina.
