Washington State head football coach Jake Dickert ended his three-year stint with the program after the 2024 season. He’ll soon enter his debut campaign with Wake Forest.
He was replaced by Jimmy Rogers last December. Cougars wide receiver Josh Meredith voiced his opinion on the coaching change this week.
While Dicker’s exit was unexpected, there’s much excitement surrounding Rogers’ hiring. He’s saw a ton of success at his most recent stop, and fans are hopeful it continues in Pullman.
Who is Washington State’s new football coach?
Jimmy Rogers is a former South Dakota State linebacker that earned all-conference honors with the Jackrabbits as a player. He got into coaching soon after his playing career ended.
Rogers was able to return to SDSU after spending time as a graduate assistant with Florida Atlantic. He spent 10 years on the staff before landing the head coaching job in 2023.
Under Rogers’ leadership, the program won a national title in Year 1. They followed it up with a 12-3 campaign in 2024.
The Jackrabbits went 27-3 with Rogers at the helm. That output was good enough to receive interest from the Cougars.
He will now replace Jake Dickert.
The former Washington State football coach took over in 2022. He posted an overall record of 20-17 with the Cougars.
His best season came last year with the team going 8-4. Unfortunately, there was much uncertainty surrounding the future due to an everchanging college football landscape.
Conference realignment left the school to fend for itself in the dying PAC 12. The transfer portal lured much of the talent away, including starting signal caller John Mateer.
Rather than return a high-powered roster, Washington State fell victim to its surroundings. Dickert was not being rewarded for his production. So, he bailed.
Wide receiver Josh Meredith has his opinion on the exit.
Dickert is now at Wake Forest. Rogers will soon enter Year 1 in Pullman. Meredith says there’s been a significant shift with the new coaching staff.
WSU WR Josh Meredith, a veteran of a few different Cougar coaching staffs, on working with Jimmy Rogers: “It’s a complete 360. I won’t go in too deep about that. He’s gonna be up front. He’s gonna tell you the truth. Nothing’s personal that comes out of his mouth.” pic.twitter.com/trgcRRg426

Meredith is a redshirt senior for the Cougars. This will be his third head coach after initially committing to play for Nick Rolovich in 2020.
Last year, he recorded a career-high 472 receiving yards while making eight starts. He hopes to improve upon that production under the new regime.
The pass catcher appeared to hold some animosity over the way Dickert’s tenure ended last winter. His quip on integrity was telling.
Josh Meredith believes he was lied to by the previous Washington State football staff. He’s excited to be playing for a coach he can trust in his final season.
