Houston Texans star linebacker Will Anderson Jr. might be on the receiving end of a fine from the NFL due to some comments he made about the officiating after the team’s loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Divisional Round on Sunday. Anderson implied that the refs were on the side of the Chiefs.

Following the Texans’ 23-14 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday, Will Anderson Jr. — the reigning NFL defensive rookie of the year whom the Texans drafted out of the University of Alabama with the 3rd overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft — said that the team went into the game knowing it would be “us versus the refs.”

Anderson was flagged for a key roughing the passer call on Patrick Mahomes that extended a Chiefs’ drive in the first half. A second roughing the passer call to extend a Chiefs drive was also called during the game, ultimately resulting in 10 points for the defending Super Bowl champions.

“We knew it was going to be us versus the refs going into this game,” Anderson told reporters after the game.

While the Chiefs seemingly getting an inordinate amount of calls in their favor is a narrative that NFL fans have peddled for a few years, Anderson’s comments represent the first time that a star player has so explicitly stated it.

With the win over the Houston Texans in the AFC Divisional Round, the Kansas City Chiefs advanced to their 7th straight AFC Championship game, where they’ll host Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, January 26 at 6:30 p.m. EST. Over in the NFC, the Philadelphia Eagles will host the Washington Commanders in the NFC Championship Game.
